Understanding The Seed Landscape In Uganda: The Need For A Farmer-Centered Seed Policy
Agriculture is a very important sector in Uganda’s economy, as about 90 % of the population directly depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Paradoxically, hunger and malnutrition are still prevalent in the country. Current statistics show that 69.2% of Uganda’s population suffer from food insecurity, and 21.7% suffer from severe food insecurity. Stunting among children under 5 years stands at 27.9%, wasting at 3.5% 1 . Within a period of only two years (2013-2015), Uganda lost over 567,621 children due to stunting and malnutrition2. It is important to note however that many deaths go unreported especially in rural areas where hunger and malnutrition is persistent. Around 44 % of the cost associated with malnutrition occurs to children below 1 year.
