Poem & Video: THE LAND MAY FEED US NO LONGER

Oh, Uganda the land that feeds us!
A key stanza in our National Anthem
Heralding a right to food
Proud we were the pearl
Shining out in Africa
Natural forests for a green cover
Sunshine, rain throughout the year
Fertile soils with huge plantations
Rivers flowing with a natural breeze
Birds singing for great harvests
The land may no longer feed us!
The treasure at equator we were
With strong men and women
Working hard for big harvests
Food in abundance filled the stores
Gone is that glorious amazing past
Food stores have been left empty
A single meal a day not by choice
Rains going with no harvest!?
The land may no longer feed us!
Fields redundant in bushes!
Children studying on empty stomachs
Hungry parents looking up to politicians
To feed their own children at school
Leaders looking at hunger-stricken homes
Deceiving them with handouts to buy ugali
Empty granaries waiting for foreign seeds
Suffocating the indigenous seed bank
Gardens filled with intoxicated farm inputs
Artificial fertilizers defiling our virgin soils
The land may no longer feed us!
A rise fellow countrymen and women
Wake up from the deep slumber
Earlier we realized our great potential
True the land can still feed us
Our destiny lies in our hands
Food security is our social security
A right to food, a right for All
The land may no longer feed us
