Report on the launch of the Right to Food Manual

Introduction

Under the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy as well as the Bill of rights, the state has a duty to respect, protect and fulfil these rights. Specifically, Objective XXII of the Constitution obliges the State of Uganda to take appropriate steps to encourage people to grow and store adequate food, establish national food reserves and promote proper nutrition through mass education and other appropriate means required to build a healthy State. Additionally, there are national laws like the food and drugs Act, Local Governments Act, the Children’s Act, the Land Act and other regulations that provide for this right.

However, there is still limited information to guide legal practitioners as well as food and nutrition advocates. As such, CEFROHT in partnership with FIAN Uganda, FIAN International authored a manual that is designed for advocates of the right to adequate food and nutrition in Uganda. It is intended to enhance the knowledge and skills of the advocates to enable them to ensure the realization of the right to food and nutrition through litigation, advocacy and capacity building.
The Manual therefore is a guide to policy makers, judicial officers, lawyers and it aidsin awareness of the right to adequate food and nutrition as provided for in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda 1995 and the international legal framework.
